Unable to send or receive MMS, Galaxy S3

I have an O2 contract, but using an unlocked UK Galaxy S3 (BTU firmware). For a while now I've not been able to send or receive MMS messages - sending has the error 'service not activated on network', receiving gives me a text from O2 with a link to view the message. I've checked the APN, looks correct. I've reset to default settings, no luck. Sending ACTIVE to 2020 does nothing, I don't even get a reply (tried this several times).

This has been happening for some time now, although it was working a few months ago.

My girlfriend has the same phone, same contract and the same problem.

Mobile 3G data works fine.

Any ideas?

Have you phoned 02 on 202 for contract customers to have your account provisioned for mms ?

Also check in Messages>>settings and make sure you have auto-retrieve ticked under MMS settings. Reboot your phone after any change in the settings. Texting ACTIVE to 2020 should ensure you have the correct APN settings. What happens if you try to send yourself a photo?

Call 202 and make sure mms is provisioned on your account.

Those are the correct settings as jonsie has the same phone, so if you have them entered corrrectly it can only be that MMS is not provisioned on your account.

Ask O2 to turn off MMS and re-enable it, they might be reluctant to do that but it should fix the issue.

Rang O2 CS on 202, they reset the MMS provisioning, and it still doens't work. So now I've given up and will likely switch to a different network once my contract ends next month

Are you able to try your sim card in another phone and then try sending a MMS.

This will rule out wether it is your account or phone that has the issue.

My g/f has an S3 as well, but it's not working for her either. I rang CS about hers as well. Same thing, MMS provisioning was reset. Still not working.

Have you thought perhaps about a workaround by using another route to send mms messages ?

Such as WhatsApp or Viber

Very weird that it was working on both, and now not working on either! Did the change from them working to not working coincide with any particualr event? I.e. did you take them abroad, add or change a bolt on etc, and did they both stop working at exactly the same time?

I did read somewhere that the s3 has a data usage restrictor.

Perhaps terminating that process or turning it off may help.

Not been abroad, the only thing I can think of is Samsung have messed up the MMS with the latest firmware update (XXEMG4). We updated our phones with the new firmware on the same day but can't say precisely when MMS stopped working.

How about e mailing the pictures and text to your contacts instead.

Go to settings: Mobile Carrier Settings >MMS Network Settings >check, Preserve Image Resolution
Set Size Limit to 1MB

Other work-arounds could be using messaging apps such as Kik messenger or Whatsapp. These would use a few kb of data per picture, but if you have any kind of data allowance that is a lot better than paying 35p per mms!

Did you back them up and factory reset them after the update?

Try that and then re-enter the MMS settings.

Had no problems after the recent update. If your settings are as above there shouldn't be a problem unless it's account related. When you say they reset your MMS did they physically remove it and re-add it to the account? You need to insist that they do this, the process takes 24 hours.

Alternately a factory reset may help.

Did full factory reset/initialization to reinstall firmware, made no difference. Tried a Vodafone PAYG SIM, and guess what? That doesn't work either, MMS won't send or receive! This is the weirdest problem I've ever encountered
