Did you call O2 before you left the UK to make sure you could use your phone abroad? If you didn't, I'm not certain if you can set it up if you've already left the country. The problem resolved spontaneously after several hours. Why does that happen. It is v inconvenient as I needed immediate phone access on arrival for vital calls.
