Friends and family say 50% of the time when they call me they get a message saying "It has not been possible to connect your call, please try again later"

Ive tested it myself today via my land line and got the same message, I had a strong mobile signal at the time.

I called O2 who said it sounded like my phone was on its way out and that I would need to upgrade. I took my O2 sim card out and placed a T-Mobile sim in, the phone connected perfectly.

I'm using a Nokia N73 which I must have had now for about 2 and a half years. Could this be an O2 problem and not my trusty N73?

Next step would be to try your sim card in another phone as your handset seems to be ok with the T-Mobile sim. O2 will send you a new sim card if its faulty.
