Can i restrict my son going over his 500 minutes contract?

No I don't think you can sadly. The only thing you can do is change his tariff to unlimited... ?

Not on O2 monthly contracts. You can on Tesco or of course you could switch to PAYG.
It is the responsibility of the user to track usage in O2's opinion.

You can keep a check on it in My O2 yourself to warn him when he's getting near his allowance.
