Not receiving text messages

I regularly do not receive text messages sent to me, sometimes for hours. Today my girlfriend texted me at 10:07 and again at 10:18 - I was expecting her to message me, I sent her texts which she did receive, I turned my phone off & on again about 4 times - I eventually got the texts from her at 12:00.

This is not a rare occurrence - I'm tempted to blame my phone - Sony Experia Arc S, but I had similar problems with my previous Nokia, so we're thinking it has to be the network. My girlfriend is on Vodafone, maybe things will be better if I switch network when my contract is up, but does anyone have any other ideas or suggestions please?

How old is your SIM card.... Have you tried replacing it?

The SIM card is less than a year old - I went into an O2 shop last year sometime - the guru person was fully booked but one of the other staff changed the card for me.
