Signal varies as you move around, If you are somewhere with poor 3g coverage switch your phone to use 2g only.

Have tryed all what has been suggested and it still does it. Even when I am not in my area and am in a different area it still does it. Have even had a new sim put in the phone by the shop and it still does the same problem.

Sony have a 2 year warranty. It may be as well to return the phone to them as it seems like a phone problem rather than a network problem. Are you running the latest firmware?
