However, you’ll be able to use your phone to make calls using the 4G network – provided you have a compatible phone.

Follow the steps listed here to check whether your phone is compatible, or you can find a list of compatible devices if you go here and click the link shown in the screenshot below the most up-to-date compatibility list.

If the device you have isn't compatible with 4G roaming, then you will be unable to make and receive calls when you're roaming in the USA.

You need to check her tariff @Dancer7_

She may be eligible for O2 Travel Inclusive, if not then she needs O2 Travel.

However the download speeds in the US are heavily throttled and pretty poor. Good enough only for checking emails.

You should read this guide <LI-PRODUCT title="Guide: Roaming MegaGuide" id="Guide062"></LI-PRODUCT>

Her best bet is to buy a local PAYG sim from various outlets in the US, or use Wifi.

She would need to check which network has the best signal in her area, as this can vary greatly from place to place. If she wants to keep in contact with friends and family in the UK, using WhatsApp over WiFi is free to use to keep in touch with others who also have the app. If she's going to be using public WiFi, which is readily available, she should think about installing a VPN for safety.
