I organised my pay monthly contract over the phone with o2 and was not made aware that i was paying a month in advance... not just a month but a month and one day! why?..... poor service o2. Not even got the phone and I have a bill. I did the deal over the phone not online and was not even told to read any terms and conditions online or sent after i did the deal by email. really really bad service... not a good start.

It's the way all mobile phone contracts work, regardless of provider. You pay for the upcoming month's tariff and that gives you your minutes/texts/data allowance.
All terms and conditions are available online regardless of if you are a customer already or looking to be a customer.
Sorry you feel misled but it is the way everyone works. Maybe O2 could have directed you to read the T&Cs, but you would already have signed up by then anyway. I guess they assume people read them and understand what they are asking for.
If you are unhappy with how O2 have dealt with you in general, or are unhappy with the initial bill you can cancel within the first 14 days of the contract, though you will be have to pay for any useage you have made. I think (though check with them) you are then just billed a pro-rata'd tariff for the month then any aditional charges you have incured (premium texts, calls outside the inclusive types etc). Keep in mind though that other providers operate the same system (and most don't allow you to cancel within the forst 14 days).

Really? Everything I've read indicates you pay the tariff in advance.

Yes they do.
Taken from the T-Mobile website:

If you change your price plan part way through your billing period, this will create a part charge on your bill. Because you pay for your price plan a month in advance, we will need to refund you for the part you have paid that is now going to be covered by your new price plan. Then when you get your new bill we will correct the charge to pay for your new price plan.

It's in my link above, just click on it.
It's because you're charged for the few days before your normal billing date.
