Are Upgrade Handsets Locked to O2 Network

Hi,

I'm due for an upgrade on my pay monthly contract and have always upgraded through Carphone Warehouse, but O2 have now dropped CW.

My question is, if I upgrade with O2 direct will the new handset I receive be locked to the O2 Network, or will it accept any network sim? I'm not bothered about the latest handset, and currently have an iPhone 8 which will do me for a while, but my son likes his phones, and usually when I upgrade via CW I give him my the new handset that I get with my new contract as Carphone Warehouse phones were not locked to a network.

He wants the new iPhone XR and I'm due an upgrade. If I upgrade direct with O2 will the XR Handset be locked to the O2 network? My son is on a different network.

Hoping somebody can help with this.

All O2 handsets are now unlocked.
