im currently on a sim only contract and my phone is breaking. i cant afford to buy a new phone outright. if i go into the store would they be able to move my sim only onto a device plan. or would i have to pay off my contract first?

It would depend on how long you have had it and what type it is.
History has shown that o2 will allow people on a 12 month SIM only deal to upgrade to a full refresh one at around 5-6 months (providing you meet the finance criteria).
If you are on a rolling 30 day SIM plan then you should be allowed to upgrade whenever you like.
Best idea is to either call customer services or go to your local store and ask.
