36 month contract on a new phone, that's a whole additional year in comparison to other providers who charge the same/if not less. Doesn't seem competitive or am I missing something??

People can choose the length of their contract depending on their circumstances.
o2 are not the first to offer this: i think sky or virgin do too.

For some people the 36 month contract is the reason they join. It reduces the monthly payment to something affordable to them.

With the extorniate price of new phones now the only way for some people to afford one is over a longer period of repayments. With a top end phone over a £1000 many parents with children all wanting phones choose 36 months.
