They do exist at O2 I've just pinged one and seen the MX records for it so Guru help on Customer Services isn't GURU helpful.

Tesco use O2 for their mobile phone network - and smtp.o2.co.uk works with a Tesco PAYG mobile phone to send emails.

Get a O2 SIM card and low and behold smtp.o2.co.uk also works to send email.

transfer (PORT) your number existing mobile number to o2 and besides a catastrophic lack of mobile phone services ... smtp.o2.co.uk doesn't work.

Given after much ado I can now get voice/data/text but still no smtp relays services its reasonable to conclude someone hasn't flicked a switch somewhere or added my new number to a white list.

SMTP Servers are pretty simple think of someone being passed parcels and they throw them in the back of the delivery van only if its one of theirs. That person woudl be the SMTP server. and validation appears to be based on the phone number being an o2 phone number as no other credentials are asked for or required to send mail.

You can TELNET in for a quick chat "helo" MAIL FROM - VRFY ect ect. but I hate TELNET and its for the techies do so they can identify problems not me!

so the rubbish about "we got rid of these servers two years ago when we dumped the email accounts is just that" RUBBISH !

why can I not send email though o2 SMTP server? anyone with any ideas that don't involve switching it on and off or putting the details back in the SMTP server account on my mobile for the tenth time any enlightened GURUS out there ?

Why are you obsessed with using o2's smtp servers?

I can think of a few reasons why you cant use o2's smtp servers... your number isnt in the ACL of accepted users, your number doesnt exist in o2's authentication infrastructure, your blocked for spam etc etc etc..

I cant understand why you dont use your own smtp servers, as most mail services now do SPF and DKIM rDNS checks so if you use o2's SMTP servers then these will fail unless you update these records to contain o2's information, and im sure o2 wont like you doing that

have you telnet'd or SSH'd into one of the SMTP Servers from your mobile device. Also what are you using as your MTA?

My only thinking of why you dont want to you use your own mail servers is for spam, as thats the only logical explanation.

There are plenty of 3rd party smtp services including AWS's Mail Services, whcih will allow you to relay through them.. at cost .

o2 arent an email provider and tbh I wouldnt expect the GURU's to know about SMTP or anything around email apart from how to set it up..

why I am I “obsessed with using o2's smtp servers“? Easy: I am not! As a customer it facilitates my needs plain and simple. Equally that question works both ways why are you failing to recognise the needs of customers? Personally I’ve always found sitting in front of clients and sucking through my teeth with negativity and foreboding never won any contracts. Likewise failing to adapt and change is a death nail in IT related industries of which smart mobile phone are now at the forefront of.

The customer wants something its available elsewhere on other networks so give it to them, get marketing on the phone and tell them to make it a USP within our marketing mix. So no! Lets not move forward its damn inconvenient for the staff and personnel learning new stuff.

It’s certainly a specious argument you make, after all there’s GMAIL and YAHOO both free and run from apps but then again that ignores 294 million registered domain names all with the potential to have email accounts. I could be Jeff the plumber jeff@plumbingservices.plumbing with a highly effective website pushing clients to my smart phone where I either email or text them back. Why would Jeff want to know about telnet commands, logging into SSH or what a MTA (message transfer agent) was. Jeff doesn’t want you dictating how he uses technology with arguments of complexity and technical competency, he just wants a simple answer. Hey presto O2 sorts all that out for him so why go anywhere else. Try Googling [mobile network supplier name] “SMTP” it appears many people out are just like me and Jeff.

In the early days of the Internet three business’s I worked with recognised what was important and what wasn’t for the customer. Both are still around and highly successful. They didn’t suck through their teeth and say that’s going to be very hard to do with our current competencies they pushed boundaries forward.

for “Inspirational” you’re a disappointment remember the point about putting it out on a forum is so that its out there for everyone to share and enough people are asking the same question to warrant that, where’s is their answer? Exactly mired in useless text . Check SMTP on mobile networks out on Google. Its hardly me being a bit awkward is it?

Not a helpful response at all !

This might work - presumably with it being Google it should be on a distributed white list too that's important if you want the email to get through

Google SMTP Server – How to Send Emails for Free

Google's GMail SMTP server is a free service for anyone who has a GMail account. You can use this free SMTP server to send emails from your favourite web application.

If you don’t have a GMail account, you can create one at the GMail account creation page.

Then all you need to do is configure your mail client to use GMail for outgoing mail server.

As I thought :- pretty much the same for all Hosting Companies

#1 "SMTP support has not been purchased for this domain. To obtain this facility, please upgrade your hosting by choosing from the options below.

#2 An Authenticated SMTP service allows you to send emails through the Names.co.uk mail servers, using a username and password supplied by us. This can be used when your ISP (Internet Service Provider) does not provide an outgoing mail server, or if you use a machine, such as a laptop or tablet, which you use to send emails..

Their package provides webmail and POP3 IMAP but not a relay for outgoing mail (SMTP). Traditionally it has always been left up to the ISP to provide it NOT! the hosting company, they want paying for the service as an extra.

There are free SMTP relays but they might be blocked by receiving email servers where they don't appear on a white list and therefore classed as spam. You could always install a SMTP relay but most receiving clients will block it as spam because it not white listed. That's why its better to use your ISP's relay to send mail. Anything offered for free usually has a cost somewhere, its email in plain text going through someone else server you know nothing about, they could just be harvesting email addresses to sell.

I hope this has been of some help to someone because all that I've got back from this forum is moaning, complaining and lots of argumentative rubbish because I don't see things the way they do and its inconvenient "why do you have to be awkward and do that", because perhaps I am not as narrow minded as you?

WHY? simple I am the customer this is what I want, basic consumer sovereignty

This forum is a poor advert for O2 customer services !

Plus 99% of users are happy with their mail clients as is, asking their mobile network to jump through hoops so they can obtain an smtp relay is just backwards, especially as free options already exist to satisfy such a facility.
Oh and the names.co.uk smtp server you mentioned is £1.99 a month on their business plan.
