Hey
Was wondering if anyone could help me. Im travelling to Thailand on friday and want to avoid any charges for texts and calls so aim so use the hotels wifi. However will i get charged for this? Thankssssss xx

I did a bit of reading on this, and from the moneysavingexperts website it says:
While the existence of wireless networks accessible to everybody is undoubtedly a great thing, be wary of cyber hacking and thieves.
Don't enter any secure info when using public wi-fi spots, as there's a risk it can be intercepted by others on the network and used for identity theft.
I also saw a BBC special showing how easy it was to intercept Facebook information from public wifi.
That isn't completely right, if a wi-fi hotspot uses a password as jonsie said above, it will be encrypted and quite safe to use.
The only real risk is if you use an unencrypted hotspot.
Provided the encryption level is WPA or WPA2 you will be safe.
Also if you use an unencrypted hotspot using a VPN again you are safe.
