Going abroad - phone help please.

Hi, i'm hoping someone can help me with what may appear to be a very simple query.

I am due to go abroad for christmas/ new years on friday. I'm on a pay-monthly contract, with 500MB of data, and 600 minutes on calls. I want to be able to call home if possible and occasionally (tho probably rarely) use the internet on my phone, for the usual tweet etc.

 

I've never had a phone with the net on before that i've taken aborad. But I don't want to leave it at home either. I need help with the following:

 

- what are the implications of using my phone abroad? 

- do i need to upgrade any bolt-ons i have to be able to use it?

- are there any numbers i need to enable me to use my free minutes instead of being charged a crazy price when i'm back?

- is there anything i need to switch off the phone so i'm not adding up costs?

 

I am going to the US/Caribbean and I've got a feeling thats whats going to catch me out. I've looked on the website and it appears europe is pretty much covered, but not international clearly.

 

If someone can tell me in parot fashion if i need to change anything i'd be really greatful. As time is running out & i've left this to the last minute.

Presumably at some point you must have turned the phone on to check for messages etc. Did you have mobile data and roaming switched off? If so, from what you are saying then I would consider an official complaint following the procedures outlined on the link below.

Just to say that if mobile data wasn't disabled, data charges around £6/Mb would soon rack up charges of £30 (dependent on the country you were in).

In Septmember last year, I travelled abroad and was hit with the dreaded voicemail scam; the charges for calls never answered. Let me make this quite clear: I was a Vodafone customer for 8 years and was never once charged for missed calls abroad. I had never come across this particular scam before. This - despite what you may read on here - is something that people on other networks find astounding.

 

In September, no 'data charges' were applied to my account as O2 were content with the voicemail scam to ramp up the bill.

 

So, having paid this nefarious 'voicemail fee (a cost for an overseas call made to a UK based system), I switched off voicemail for my next trip.

 

And suddenly there are 'data charges' for exactly the same scenario minus the voicemail scam.

 

I will do everything I can possibly think of to ensure that no one I know or will ever meet will never do any business with O2. I will regale everyone I ever meet of horror stories of overcharging and imaginary use to reinforce this most disgusting of companies.

It's extraordinary. Either your very unfortunate or I'm very lucky.

I have yet to encounter any conspicuous charges whilst abroad:/

I was on a boat in the Indian Ocean without even a phone service let alone data service.

That certainly is interesting.

By any chance were there any calls/messages claimed?

If you call O2 they can do a network investigation for you and find out from the foriegn network exactly how much data was used, if any.

This usually has a 5 working day timescale.

I am giving O2 notice that they no longer have my permission to a direct debit mandate. I wish to scrutinise every bill before it is paid and query every charge.

You are notified of your bill 14 days before O2 take a direct debit. It is your responsibility to check it in this time.

Absolutely, I accept and concur. However, I am still not withdrawing permission for O2 to access my account. I have absolutely no trust or confidence in that organisation.
