E160 and the usual 'Failed to Connect' message

A couple of days ago I purchsed an O2 E160 Huawei USB modem and have experienced the same problems as many people here on the board have - and have got nowhere further in solving it.

How can we find out whether O2 / Huawei are on the case to resolve this thing?

I bought the dongle, inserted the SIM card, installed the software with no problems onto my laptop (Windows XP Pro). It showed O2 - UK in the list of available networks with Signal Strength Good to Very Good from my flat in TW14 area (Feltham, Middlesex giving good coverage). I received a message saying "Failed to connect to the network, please check you have good coverage and check your profile" or similar.

I tried a few more times, changed location, uninstalled and reinstalled the dongle software, took out the SIM card and gently wiped it clean, and still nothing.

After spending time with O2 customer service, they suggested returning the dongle as the SIM may be faulty.

I did that the next day, got a new dongle and new SIM card (a whole new pack entirely) and the thing still didn't work. Same message, "Please check coverage and profile". Signal strength showed as Excellent from another PC, dongle on all ocassions flahed Green light, so everything fine there - dongle working, SIM card fine, PC fine, signal strength fine, but I couldn't connect.

Whilst at the PC (which had another internet connection) I purchased some time online at mobilebroadbandaccess.o2.co.uk, and received an SMS message on the dongle software confirming receipt.

Still I can't connect - the same message about coverage and to check my profile.

I spent time again with Technical Support and we change profile settings (to 3G only back to 3G preferred etc), tried setting up a new profile with username and password as required, still no luck.

I'm at my wits end trying to get this to work! Do representatives of O2 read this forum and are able to respond? I've no idea what else I'm suppose to to.

Do we need to get in touch to Huawei about the E160 not functioning for some users? Just a shame the box says "installe software - connect - load funds and start surfing" but for some of us it just doesn't work that way, despite having no problems loading the software or with coverage.

What to do?

EDIT:

Here is something else you can try if you've experienced this problem, I stumbled across and got my E160 working!

After ranting about it earlier, I had a play around and went into the Internet Explorer settings just to see what would happen if I tried to create a New Connection from there (by pressing 'Add' in the 'Connections' tab).

It gave me an error message stating that the Remote Access Connection Manager service wasn't started.

So, I went to into my Services (via Admnistrative Tools in Control Panel), it was Disabled (by myself at some point in the past when I wanted to cut down on unnecessary processes). After Starting the service, the O2 Connection Manager software suddenly sprang into life and I got connected.

So, if you get the 'Failed to connect, check coverage and profile' message when you try to connect, look for the Remote Access Connection Manager service on your PC/laptop and check whether it's started or not.

Who knows, it might help, and it's worked for me so might work for someone else.

Good luck!

E160 and the usual 'Failed to Connect' message

Do representatives of O2 read this forum and are able to respond

any o2 staff on the forums are here in a personal capacity not as representatives of o2 - just means we have to be careful about what we post :smileyhappy:

give the following a try

1st – UnInstall o2 connection manager (select to restart pc later to allow you to change pbk folder in step 2)

2nd - locate the Rasphone.pbk file in the pbk folder**
rename the Pbk folder to Pbk.old.

3rd – Reboot PC then Re-Install connection manager & drivers,

**The Pbk folder is located:

In Vista - C:\Users\Username\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Network\Connections\Pbk

In XP - C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Microsoft\Network\Connections

If you cannot see the Pbk folder (or any of the folders listed above), make sure that you can see hidden files and folders. To do so, follow these steps:

Click Start, click My Computer, and then click Folder Options on the Tools menu.
Click the View tab.
Click Show hidden files and folders, and then click OK.

Let me know how u get on or PM me if u need more help!!

Huawei E160

[ Edited ]
I had terible connection problems (check connection and update profile and crap like that) with the above USB mobile modem until I went to the O2 site and updated the connection manager software (I was using the older version). Now it works like a dream with no errors at all! However, I get either a low or very low signal when connected directly to a USB port on my laptop. If I try and use a USB extension cable, the whole modem stops working. I stuck it on the window pane with a bit of blutack but it just didn't want to know on a USB extension cable, not even with the short white one USB extension cable that O2 supply in the box! Below is the link to the connection manager software update hoping it might help others?

E160 Connection Failure - Possible Solution

I had the same problem on both a vista laptop and an xp laptop using the PAYG E160 dongle.

I solved it by updating connection manager to the latest version (obviously this needs another connection somewhere but McDonalds give you free wi-fi). When the new version had installed i went through the wizard as normal but then exited CM and removed the dongle. Then i deleted the celluar network in Windows network manager, reinserted the dongle and i got a connection.

This deleted cellular network was created using the old CM version on the dongle and i think that was where the problem lied. Using the new CM version recreated the Cellular Network and it worked.

I had to do the same proceedure on both laptops so this is not an OS problem.

Oh yes and on the day i did this i believe O2 were having network problems so if this is a red herring i apologise.

Hope this helps.

E160 Connection Failure

I still get very low but at least constant connections with my E160 but with the 3 E220, it's useless! When it does actually connect, it's really fast but it's terrible to actually get the connection and keep it. I am using Mobile Partner, the update from Hauwei for the E220 and I have also run the O2 E160 with this quite sucessfully as well. So I just stick with the O2 E160 now as although it's quite slow, it never drops a connectioon like the 3 dongle does. I just can't wait until TalkTalk pull their finger out and connect my broadband again! I only moved to the next town and they couldn't even get that right! What a cock-up!

E160 Connection Failure

UPDATE

I finally got a Panorama Data Card Antenna for the above and it has upped my signal strength by a good 50% if not more and I live in a bad area for any mobile signal! After connecting the new antenna, according to the O2 Connection Manager, I don't have a signal at all but it does and gets on the Internet and opens website pages a lot faster than before. I just wish it had a longer cable or that I could buy an extension cable for the built-in antenna cable as it is quite short and maybe putting the antenna nearer to an open window might just help with an even better signal? However, I mainly use the new update from Hauwei with Moble Partner and I have yet to use this with the new antenna so I will let you all know what it's like as and when. Cheers!

Panorama Data Card Antenna

I finally got the above antenna but to be quite honest, after using it for a while, it did make a bit of a difference but now I don't notice much of a difference at all, so that was a total waste of a score! But the problem I now have (with or without the antenna) is that although I am getting a relatively good signal and constant (unlike the 3 USB dongle), it was showing as connected to HDSPA all the time ever since I've had it, hence I was constantly connected. Now all I get is HSDPA for about 30 seconds and then it reverts to WCDMA, of which I have no idea what that means or why it is doing this all of a sudden after working so well with HSDPA (I don't know what that the hell that means either but it works so thats fine by me)? Would anyone out there have any possible idea why this should be happening all of a sudden please and if so, many thanks in advance. Cheers! Mike

had the same issue and found a resolution

To resolve this issue, remove the WAN Miniport IP and the WAN Miniport PPTP device, and then reinstall both Miniports.

1. Delete the VPN connection
2. Click Start, click Run, type regedit in the Open box, and then click OK.
3. Locate the following registry subkey: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E972-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
4. On the File menu, click Export& choose a destination and give it a name, and then click Save.
5. Click each of the registry subkeys under this key, and then view the Data column of the DriverDesc value to determine which of the subkeys corresponds to WAN Miniport (IP). And the one that corresponds with WAN Miniport (PPTP). For example, the 0005 and 0008 subkeys.
6. Right-click the subkey whose DriverDesc value data is WAN Miniport (IP) (for example, right-click 0005), and then click Delete. Click Yes to confirm that you want to delete the key. Then do the same for the subkey whose DriverDesc value data is WAN Miniport (PPTP).
7. Close Registry Editor
8. Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
9. Click the Hardware tab, and then click Device Manager.
10. On the View menu, click Show hidden devices.
11. Under Network adapters, right-click WAN Miniport (IP) and then click Uninstall. Click OK to confirm that you want to remove this device. Repeat this step for WAN Miniport (PPTP) as well.
12. Reboot the PC
13. Find netrasa.inf in C:\Windows\inf, Open and place a semicolon in front of the line that starts "Excludefromselect=\" and end with "MS_NdisWanNbfIn,MS_NdisWanNbfOut" under the section. (all lines between)
14. Click Start then Control Panel.
15. Go to Add Hardware.
16. Click Next, then select Yes I have already connected the hardware, then click Next.
17. Scroll down and select Add a new Hardware device, click Next.
18. Select Install the Hardware that I manually select from a list (Advanced), click Next then select Network Adapter in the list and select Next.
19. Select Microsoft in the left column and then select WAN Miniport (PPTP) and click Next
20. Select Continue Anyway, Click Finish and close out of everything. Now do the same thing for WAN Miniport (IP).
21. Uninstall, then Reinstall network adapters.
22. Click Start, Run, type in netsh int ip reset resetlog.txt and click ok
23. Reboot the PC.
24. Uninstall and reinstall the VPN connection and this should fix the issue.

Some times I have to repeat steps 22 and 23 a 2nd time for it to work. Let me know if this was any help or any other errors that occured after attempting the steps above.

E160 and the usual 'Failed to Connect' message

For vista users, as mentioned in the first post, this is most likely due to the remote access connection manager being disabled. to fix go into control panel - administrative tools - computer management. double click on services and find remote access connection manager. set it to automatic and hit apply. the connection manager should work now.

edit: the 02 tech guys have no clue about anything other than "uninstall and reinstall the connection manager." dont even bother calling and wasting your time unless you are going to cancel.
