Re: ice cream sandwich update

if your firmaware isn't an XEU or other generic region versiob e.g network branded 02U or CPW etc then yu will have to wait for that operator to release the update...or void warranty and go down the odin route and debrand

Re: ice cream sandwich update

Those who don't have it yet, I'm sure you will soon it is like most updates a rolling release where different versions get it at different times you could question them on twitter and CS.
As for Ice Cream Sandwich, it's great, shame that MIUI ruins it though. Still nice to use and a lot smoother than it was. Faster and the screen looks good finally thanks to improved colour gradients.
Also a little suggestion to those who use the phone quite a lot, I purchased the "Extended battery" which is 2000mah rather than the standard 1650mah and now can use the phone as much as I want during the day with no fear of it running out. First charge on ICS I got about 22 hours out of it and the display had been on for nearly 4 hours with full syncing and a live wallpaper.

Re: ice cream sandwich update

Oh and I for one would like to Thank o2 for the speed in which they got this update out. When I was waiting for the Xperia X10 update to 2.1? 2.2? we had reason to complain. With this ICS update nobody had reason to complain and they set things right with me with this.
On an unrelated note, I notice in some youtube videos when I see the Gs2 some peoples outer edge/rim on the phone looks more silvery than mine? Mine appears more like a real dark silvery almost black, maybe its my eyes.

Re: ice cream sandwich update

Hi,
O2 customers using a Samsung Galaxy S2 bought directly from O2 will be able to upgrade to the most recent version of Android called Ice Cream Sandwich (ICS).
Android Ice Cream Sandwich (4.0) brings many improvements, including:
• Face Unlock
• Android beam for NFC-based sharing
• Quick responses for incoming calls
• Control over network data
• Rich and versatile camera capabilities
To upgrade to ICS customers will need to be able to connect their phones to their computer and use Samsung’s upgrade software called Kies.

Re: ice cream sandwich update

What I can't get my head around is all these phones are exactly the same from Samsung and yet so different you've got S2, S2 NFC,S2 XEU,S2 O2, S2 CWP and no doubt many many more so why the delay in releasing a new OS, it's the same for tablets there seems to be no information as to when they will be able to update. I know I'm not up on mobile OS but when say M/S release a new OS out it goes to all and you don't have to wait for say HP, Advent, Acer et al to having it working. Beyond me I'm sorry

Re: ice cream sandwich update

because various UK operators e.g 02(O2U), Carphone Warehouse(CPW) like to make little changes to the stock UK(XEU) Software. This could be adding a boot log like 02 do or blocking certain applications, or just prefilling the various internet settings. Also some add there own software.
These changes can mean they need to change the way the OS is configured to make them work properly.
Hence you get multiple variant of the software all of which then have to be tested by the operator before release. On top of this the operators also have to verify that the original was fit for release as well.
With regards to the NFC this is actually running slightly different hardware and has a different product code - hence the P on the end and is treated I think as a seperate phone.
I would like to see google take the operators out of the loop like apple did and say you will provide our firmware without modification this would solve alot of problems as it would only be the manufacturers that would have to make it run on there hardware, a further step would be to make it so that the manufacturers were not alowed to tweak it either - pure android the way it was intended. Much the way that microsoft and apple do with PC and mobile OS's.
It means phones would have to comply with minimum hardware requirements and phone makers could concentrate on developing awesome phones - what they are good at, and the OS people can concentrate on awesome OS's like android.

Re: ice cream sandwich update

Hi, I have a question to any of the engineers and gurus here. I have a HTC Sensation unlocked but branded to Orange. I am using an O2 sim card. What must I do? Install the O2 version of Ice Cream when it be available, or have an Orange sim and install the update from Orange? I don't want to brick my Sensation.
Thanks
