Get Rid of Palm Pre

Hi,

Has anyone else here had bad experienced with the Pre, I got mine on launch day and the general experience of the phone has not been great, poor battery life, signal and a 6 month wait for premium apps have only made be resent buying the device.

I am in the process of dealing with O2's complaint review team to see what they can do about an early upgrade to another device perhaps Android or iPhone.

Will update with any progress I make.

Get Rid of Palm Pre

sounds exactly like mine - but in addition the keys ligt up when they want to, the screen sometimes doesn't turn on when you open the phone (or if you press the power button).....

o2 have basically told me I need to send it away for repair if its faulty and there is no other option.

thing is im not sure I can be bothered to be without a phone for another two weeks for them to tell me there isn't anything wrong with it!

frustrating. Oh well. Only 11 months to go on the contract.

Get Rid of Palm Pre

Out of interest has anyone in this thread had their Pre sent away for repair at least 3 times already?

Get Rid of Palm Pre

I was about to buy a HTC Pulse Mini and get it unlocked and use it instead of the palm pre until I read the techradar review and it sounds like it isn't as good as the palm. Unlocked wildfire and desire's are still quite expensive.

the second hand price of pre's on UK ebay has crashed, now they seem to be getting between £80 and £100.

Get Rid of Palm Pre

O2 admitted to me that there were "some" issues with the Palm however they would not go into any great detail.

when I pushed this with the complaints review team, they immediately credited my account with 1 months line rental as a gesture of goods will.

I have to say that the Palm Pre is a concept is pretty good however the dodgy build quality, poor reception and appalling support from both O2 UK and Palm UK and albeit killed the device.

Surely there should be some option for Palm owner to upgrade early so that we can get away from this terrible device.

I did it

well, I bought the Pulse Mini (Huawei U8110) at the weekend and it is using my O2 SIM card and everything is working.

I have to say that the Pulse Mini is not quite as good hardware as the Pre - however, the apps are amazing and so my Pre has been switched off and will go to the big top drawer in the sky. There are 10's of thousands of the apps that truly make the cheaper hardware work harder and give you, the customer, full choice over what you want out of your phone. Not only can you select apps - but you can change core system components (like the home page) to be what you want.

On my Pre, I downloaded about 20 or so apps and used about 10 of them regularly. On Android (v2.1) have already downloaded about 50 and have completely changed the stock look and feel of the phone so it is reactive and fast (solved the problem of the techradar article). i can now connect to my servers on my phone (no app for the pre to do that) and there are so many better quality apps available than for the pre.

perhaps the biggest feature is that I can backup my phone in the knowledge that I have the data secure on my own premises. the weirdest feature is that you can use an android phone as a metal detector.

So what's the answer?
+ if you have spare cash lying around and you're techi - then the cheapo pulse mini android platform is a great stand-in until your contract expires.
+ the pulse mini is not as good hardware as the Pre - the screen is not reactive enough and there is no hardware keyboard - however, there are plenty of Android phones that are good quality (HTC Desire etc) - but they are expensive for those of us that are 6 months into a Palm Pre o2 contract. Pre users will notice that the glide-finger-across screen is not as good with the pulse mini
+ I am going to make it pay for itself by getting rid of the £10+VAT insurance for the Palm Pre.
+ When my contract comes up - I am going to get a top of the range Android phone.

-- expansys is one source for a wide selection of phones that are unlocked (i.e. will work with your o2 sim card
-- tmobile sell a version of the pulse mini; but it is locked to the TMobile network.

Get Rid of Palm Pre

My Pre is currently away at the repairs department for the second time. I got it in November 2009 and all was OK until the WebOS 1.4 upgrade in March, which crashed the handset completely. It was reprogrammed and returned very quickly, but all was not completely well.

After three months of problems, it went back again. Dropped calls, battery discharging overnight, one eleven minute call using 10% of battery power, getting SOS only all the time, internet freezing, google maps constanty telling me that I had no internet connection, alarms not working properly etc. I posted it to them by recorded delivery on the 27th May and Royal Mail tracking had it as delivered on the 1st June. Having heard nothing by the 8th June, I rang them up, only to be told they hadn't got it!

They now claim they didn't receive it until the 9th and I should have it back early next week, three weeks after I know they received it. They are completely unresponsive to any idea of compensation for taking money for a service I have not received for almost a month. Any further issues with the handset and it will be returned a third time, at which point I will be asking for a different make and model as a replacement.

My previous handset was the Palm Treo 500, which still works like a charm, but I'll never have another Palm ever. If you want a handset with all the bells and whistles, get a Pre. If you want the bells and whistles to work, don't!

Get Rid of Palm Pre

small claims court would sort that out for you. it's designed so that consumers can make small claims against large organisations like this. speak to your solicitor or citizens advice bureau.
