Today (February 9th) is Safer Internet Day

Coordinated in the UK by the UK Safer Internet Centre, the celebration sees over a thousand organisations get involved to help promote the safe, responsible and positive use of digital technology for children and young people

http://www.saferinternet.org.uk/safer-internet-day/2016

As part of this campaign, the BBC have published results on a survey looking at children and social media.

The survey looked at the 10-18years age group.

Over 75% of 10-12 year olds have social media accounts even though they are well below the legal age requirements. These accounts include Facebook, Instagram, Whatsapp and Snapchat.

1 in 5 of the younger children have seen online bullying, whereas more than half of the older children surveyed have seen or experienced this.

Check out our article on The Blue below that talks about O2's work with the NSPCC

Hi @Toby Yes I have just read that article in the Blue. I have to commend O2 for their work with the NSPCC. Great initiative. They have shown an actual case study where they helped a Mum and her 10 year old son.

This was good to read as well

‘A call which we receive quite often are parents and guardians wishing to put privacy controls on their child’s mobile phone. Covering aspects such as pornography, swearing and other inappropriate content, we give parents step by step guides on how to set up these controls.’ – Helpline Advisor

This may seem pretty basic to the mobile phone savvy folk. It isn't that simple if you have limited knowledge

Good link @Bambino. As it says 'adults could learn a thing or two as well'. Quite right, we take a lot for granted nowadays and no point becoming complacent...

Also, if you do a security check of your Google account today, which only takes a couple of minutes, Google will give you 2GB of free extra One Drive storage.

https://privacy.google.com/security-controls.html?utm_source=google&utm_medium=hpp-desktop-unauth&ut...

According to this article, to get the extra free storage you have to run the check by February 17th.

Thanks for posting @Cleoriff

I didn't really know there was a special day and awareness should be year-round. Let's hope this day brings security and awareness to the fore but I was happy to learn from my eldest grandson that this is part of the school curriculum at his new secondary school.

Got a text about this. From the school.

Dear Parents/Carers,
Today is Safer Internet Day, this topic will be discussed with the whole school as part of our Technologies Curriculum. This would provide an ideal opportunity to have a conversation with your child about internet safety. Parents and carers play a crucial role in supporting children to navigate the risks and make the most of the opportunities offered by technology.
The link below provides help guidance to support your child(ren) to make positive use of digital technologies .
