According to this website - http://www.farina1.com/adsl/default.aspx
you should be able to achieve a maximum line speed of 8785Kbps with those stats.

Likely causes of your stats are probably distance from the exchange / internal house wiring.

Have a look at this guide - http://www.kitz.co.uk/adsl/socket.htm
see if that helps improve your line stats.

Hi All,
Could anyone take a look at my numbers and tell me if they can see anything irregular?
I should be on the 20Mbit Premium plan, and when my line was checked just prior to subscribing I it came back with a likely speed of 10Mbit which I was happy with. However once connected I've been consistently getting 3-4Mbit which is disabointing to say the least.
My numbers....
Uptime: 1 days, 22:21:10
DSL Type: G.992.5 annex A
Bandwidth (Up/Down) : 1,187 / 3,837
Output Power (Up/Down) : 12.0 / 16.0
Line Attenuation (Up/Down) : 24.5 / 44.5
SN Margin (Up/Down) : 10.0 / 6.5
Loss of Framing (Local/Remote): 0 / 0
Loss of Signal (Local/Remote): 0 / 0
Loss of Power (Local/Remote): 0 / 0
Loss of Link (Remote): 0
Error Seconds (Local/Remote): 0 / 0
FEC Errors (Up/Down): 1277 / 194787725
CRC Errors (Up/Down): 1277 / 343801
HEC Errors (Up/Down): 14210 / 202187
Thanks in advance.

yes there's a problem with the amount of noise not only on ur downstream lots on ur up load stream. check ur filters, internal wiring and try the test socket.

Quick update guys. I've got JD's auto speed tester going using the wireless connection. I set it going last night and it was recording around 2 meg downloads untill 11pm then it shot up to around 4mb untill 7pm today when it went back down to 1.5meg so maybe there throttling the connection?

Anyway I'll let it run for 24hrs than do the same with the ethernet connection for a comparision.

I will also try and get hold of a wireless N router to see if that helps the wireless connection

I did check the package I'm on and it is the premium package

I'll get back when I have some more comprehensive results

Thanks for your help so far

Are your speed test results based on www.speedtest.net website only ?

I think that JDs auto speed test uses the TBB test files by default although this can be changed. I have it configured to use some BT test files.

The results that I posted yesterday (2mb,4mb&1.5mb) were from JDs auto speed tester. It's downloading a 10mb file and measuring that.

The results that I first posted (4mb wireless & 7.5mb ethernet) were from www.speedtest.net

I've switched back to ethernet now to get 24hours of data from that, the tests are running every hour.

I think i've just about cracked it now. So for those reading this with the same/ simular issue's this is what I found.

1)speedtest.net is not accurate on my machine (think the site is a little to flashy for my old laptop)
2)My wireless TCP settings within windows were restricting the wireless speed and needed ammending

Here's what I did

1)I downloaded JD's auto speed tester and and run tests on a 60 min cycles for 24hours wireless then 24hours wired and compaired the results. Wired was up around 10meg but wireless did'nt got above 4meg

2)I downloaded a program called TCP optimizer with allowed me to check/change my wireless settings in windows. Windows had capped the wireless connection at 4meg so I changed that to the max setting which was 20meg and set to optimize. Saved and re-booted.

3)As a final good measure I downloaded netstumbler which scans all the wireless networks that my laptop can see and tells me there channel. The only one that didn't overlap with the surrounding networks was channel 1 so I set the router to that channel

I ran JD's auto speed tester again and bingo Wireless is now the same speed as wired, then compared with www.broadbandspeedchecker.co.uk the results are about the same. Plugged back into the slave phone socket in the study and checked, same speed. So all ok.

OK my speed is not quite the 18meg estimated or 16meg through put the router shows but it's acceptable

You can get the software from the following links

TCP Optimizer www.speedguide.net/downloads.php
Netstumbler www.netstumbler.com/downloads/
JDs auto speed tester http://forum.adslhelper.co.uk/index.php ... owtopic=41

TCP Optimizer looks more complicated than it is. When opened there is a slider bar at the top this is the connection speed. Slide the car to the right then at the bottom of the page click the box next to optimal settings and click save
