Wireless Box 5 problem

O2 kindly sent me a Wireless Box 5 to replace my O2WB2 recently, but I've been having problems with it. Every so often it cuts off Internet access from one of my PCs. I seem to have to reboot the router to get it to work again, but then shortly afterwards it'll cut off one of the other PCs or the same one again. It doesn't discriminate between wireless and LAN clients, Linux or Windows. I've checked this isn't caused by clashing IP addresses, and the affected PCs can still access o2wirelessbox.lan and my other PCs. I've done a settings reset but the problem came back. The firewall setting is "Standard".
My setup is a little unusual, because I've got a gigabit switch plugged into the router and all my wired PCs etc are plugged into the switch. That worked fine with the WB2. Since getting the WB5 I've also added a second switch (daisy-chained from the first) so I can connect up my new "Smart" TV as well as my HTPC without running a second cable into the room they're in.
Any thoughts?

Re: Wireless Box 5 problem

Check the routers "intrusion detection" log.
You could try disabling IDS, telnet commands to do that are here:-
http://npr.me.uk/telnet.html
Could also look at the routers syslog via telnet for any clues, that survives a reboot. Details in same link as above.

Re: Wireless Box 5 problem

Telnet is useless on the O2 boxes, Administrator is not allowed to log in. I can view the IDS log in the web interface. It's showing 0 for everything at the moment, but I reset the box quite recently, thinking I'd probably have to return it and use a spare old Netgear DG834 (unfortunately not the Broadcom version) for a while.

Re: Wireless Box 5 problem

Try using SuperUser as the Telnet login (note the capital letters)
The password will be the serial number of the router.

Re: Wireless Box 5 problem

I give up, it's now pretending I can't forward ports to one of my PCs and blocking zeroconf. It wouldn't be so bad if every time it throws a wobbly (several times a day) I didn't have to set up the whole thing because there's no way to save and restore its config, and if every HTTP request it receives wasn't forced to wait several seconds before being serviced.

Re: Wireless Box 5 problem

I've had this same problem with my CRAPPY box 5. I have since got them to send me back a box 2 as I just said cancel my internet. I now have a free box 2 that works and a CRAPPY box 5 that they don't want back as it's listed as my default box. I have since found out that after switching from WPA to WEP that these Box 5's seem to now stay connected. So My dilemma is, do I use the Box 5 on WEP, the VERY slow box 2, purchase a router , Or just change ISP's that give out a fully working box?

Thanks, that works. I found out you can also log in to the web interface as SuperUser, and you have to do that in order to access the backup feature.

Re: Wireless Box 5 problem

You can set that as the default user and not use Administrator at all.
