I have the same line attenuation as you, and get a maximum bandwidth of 6,100kbps, and a throughput of about 5Mbps, so I suspect you are pushing it to a higher speed than your line can handle.
If I squeeze mine to that speed the SNRM will drop at night and cause a reboot, so that might be what is happening to yours.
I doubt if you'll get anything higher than you have now.
If you haven't done it try a hard reset by pushing in the reset at the back until the lights go out, as this is sometimes necessary after the firmware update to clear old settings.
If I reboot it at night it keeps the sync to a level where it won't drop out, if I resync during the day it goes to a higher speed, but I will then get the drop outs again.
I also set the SuperUser log in as default, and let windows remember the password so I can log in quickly when I need to.

My son had the update and now his Home plugs wont connect.

Try hard resetting the O2 Box by pushing a toothpick in the reset hole at the back until the lights go out, then see if it works.

Turns out he just re-booted and that done the job.
Hes only been using the o2 II router for a month or so, he was using his netgear but it gave up the ghost after seven years but Hes getting a new one.

Just to be clear, I wasn't using DMT tool to tweak snrm, the telnet commands were removed by Thomson for the o2 box. It was just quicker to check the stats that way. I've gone back to using my D-Link 2640B (BCM 6348 more powerful than the o2 box's 6338)for now, its always synced slower by about 200kb but at least the QOS can be configured and works, and I can use DMT tool to force adsl2 instead of 2+, my line can't make use of frequencies above 1100 anyway. I think the slower sync is because it reports the attenuation as being 54.5-55.0 for adsl2+ and 50.5 to 51.5 for adsl2. For comparison to the o2 box stats:

When I was connecting to O2 in September 2010 - person selling me my plan said that my broadband will become cheaper and faster starting from January 2011 since there will be O2s exchange (or whatever it's called) placed in our area (Aberdeen, AB24)
I was reassured that my plan will go down from J19 to J12 and there will be no 20GB limit.
Pointless to say that since then I've not heard anything from O2 regarding this, yet received a letter warning that my broadband will become even more expensive in order for O2 to keep up with market prices and competition.
My Internet speed is pathetic! For example I've checked it now (Monday morning) it's 0.93mb my DOWNLOAD SPEED. How good is that for 19 pounds a month? I am clearly not going to download more than assigned to me 20GB with that speed!
And, unfortunately I can do nothing about it, except write message in this forum. I am one extremely sad and disappointed customer.

Is the Firmware Update still being rolled out?.
My box still has version 8.2.23.0, its on most of the day and evening.
The O2 Broadband Planned Work Notifications webpage no longer indicates Firmware updates are in progress.

If it's not on all the time you've probably missed it.
You can either ring O2 and see if they'll push it out for you, or do it yourself as described here:

where you can download the latest version of the O2 CD with it on.
You need version 8.2.7.7.
