Internet speed declining, no reason why?!

When I had O2 broadband installed I was receiving around 6MB and had no issues, then in January 2011 my internet speed suddenly declined to 2MB... I've made a few phone calls, the blame was initially put onto my PC and BT (as they are my landline provider). Having had three new computers come into the household over the last 12 months the issue is definitely not my PC since they all have the same rubbish speeds. BT have informed three times that there is no fault at all on my landline, I have changed the socket the router is plugged into to no real avail. I can occasionally almost reach 3MB with the front of the main phone socket off and the router plugged into the test socket (i think that is its name?) but most of the time now I can't even watch Eastenders via BBC iplayer due to 'lack of bandwidth'.... It doesn't matter whether the computers are wired or wireless, the speeds are still unreliable and exceptionally slow. Recently as well I have to refresh website pages roughly 3 times in order for the page to load, my steam account is constantly unable to connect to the servers due to my internet connection being so unreliable. What on earth is going on?! Why is my connection awful?! No damage has been done to the router either but I am getting to the point where I am totally fed up. I noticed before that the price of broadband is increasing soon, something that I have not yet been informed of and I don't see why I should have to pay extra for a 'service' that is just causing me so many problems. Trying to connect to my university server never used to be a problem but now it cannot be done at all. Does anyone have any tips for other things I can try before I give in and take my custom elsewhere?

Your line stats don't look bad, try a restart of the O2 Box around midday for a better sync speed.
An ongoing network issue now appears to have been fixed:

Re: Internet speed declining, no reason why?!

I keep restarting it at various times :smileysad: Hopefully the fix and a restart may finally do the job.
Sorry about the lack of spacing! I'd just driven 240 miles in fog and was exhausted, my brain was shutting down so tried to get it out before my brain completely went.I think if I re read it I would probably cringe :smileytongue:

Line Attenuation (Up/Down) : 30.0 / 50.5

When I had O2 broadband installed I was receiving around 6MB and had no issues, then in January 2011 my internet speed suddenly declined to 2MB.

With an attenuation of 50.5dB there is probably absolutely no chance of a router syncing at 6Mb or above, assuming you are referring to 6Mb throughput speed. Can you post a speed test result from HERE
Your current sync at 4556kbps is correct for a 50.5dB attenuation.
So unless BT re-routed your line in January which extended the cable distance between the exchange and your property, I can't suggest any conclusion.
Perksie is correct, the stats are very good.

Re: Internet speed declining, no reason why?!

It was 6Mb over a year ago and I tested it using both speedtest and kitz although I may have interpreted it wrong? The 6mb it used to be is the download speed, I can't remember what the upload speed was.
I restarted the router at about 2pm and have just ran speedtest. I use both that and kitz to test my speeds but I am very happy with the new results, I hope the fix Perskies posted has done the job permanently!

If the problems start up again then is there any way to speed it up other than another router restart? Getting a big fed up of doing them every 2-3 days

Re: Internet speed declining, no reason why?!

Before January, if you were seeing over 6Mb/s on speedtest.net where now you're seeing 4.41Mb/s then I would say that BT have re-routed your line which would have changed the attenuation.
I'm not doubting what you're saying but with your current 50.5dB attenuation, it's nigh on impossible on an ADSL2+ connection to achieve 6Mb/s let alone more than 6Mb/s.
If I'm wrong then somebody will be along to correct me :smileywink:
But those stats you posted, for a 50.5dB attenuation, are very good. If BT have re-routed your line then it would be almost impossible to persuade them to change it back to what it was prior to January. The only way to increase the connection speed of what you have now, is if FTTC is available to you in your local exchange.

Re: Internet speed declining, no reason why?!

The rerouting would actually make sense. I know they fixed line damage the line the December before my speeds changed but as I was away pretty much all of the December I don't know if the speeds were affected straight after but I am guessing so! But like I said (if you could make it out lol) I've been on the phone to them just as much about a faulty line but keep being told nothing is wrong.
Currently getting a lot of web page not availabe - connection time out errors as well, figured that was the router as it happens on all the PCs, any idea on that? :s Just changed to Chrome from firefox in case that was the problem but still happening. Using the O2 wireless II router if that helps?
