The box sometimes needs a hard reset after an update, try holding in the reset button at the back until the lights go out.

I always use SuperUser (more functions) as user name and the serial number is the default password.
You can log in with either and then change the default user.

I have the same problem. Went through all the trouble shooting steps with a couple of tech support guys, but the problem keeps coming back. Just had my router replaced, and the issue remains. I think it has to do with O2's traffic management at peak times, as the problem doesn't manifest off peak.
I also have issues downloading apps and music from iTunes at these times.
