I was going to upgrade my current O2 refresh plan (iPhone 5s) to an iPhone 6 plus, however when I went to upgrade it said I would have to pay off my current contract there and then. Would this mean i wouldn't be able to use my phone until my new one was delivered?

Also will the 6 and 6+ be excluded from student discount on O2 open?

No you'll be able to use it as it's yours.

It means pay off the handset plan for your current phone your using.

Then you can upgrade to the iPhone. 6 and choose a new tariff.

The phone you've paid off is yours

Both phones use the nano sim so you'll be able to pop your current one into the iPhone 6 too.

Yes the airtime part is separate and you keep on paying that airtime part each month as normal.

When you upgrade to the iPhone 6 their will be a new tariff and handset plan for you to choose.

Regarding the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 plus.

Take into account a lot of people have Pre Ordered these and to be honest if past experience replays then quite a few people will not get the phone on the 19th as shown on the sites on here and also in other networks sites and independents.

Their is simply not enough units to cover all the orders so please be ready for some possible delays on despatch of the iPhone.
