There are alternatives to Google Maps that don't use data.

You can download a free app called Map Factor from the Play Store: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.mapfactor.navigator&hl=en

You can then store maps on your phone and get turn by turn directions using GPS only, which is free. I have used this app both in the UK and in the US and it is great.

There is also an app from Nokia called Here which is also free:

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.here.app.maps&hl=en

Don't waste your money buying extra data just for Google Maps.

Hi @Anonymous and Welcome to the forum.

To directly answer your question -> Im on payg with 2Gb of data and use Google Maps and find my data bundle more than enough when using Google Maps. Take into account everyone's usage pattern is different although I do use it quite heavily.

So possibly 5Gb would be ample.

Would you like some further knowledge on alternative Maps ?

The Here app is great and I'm using it here in Thailand. My only criticism is the size of the maps. Make sure you set the app to save them to the memory card but I would highly recommend it. No data used once the maps are downloaded.

You're welcome @Cleoriff I've found the Map Factor app invaluable, particularly when I'm in the US. I use a T-Mobile Pay & Go sim in my phone when I'm over there with just minutes and texts and no data. I find that most places I go have free WiFi, except when I'm driving. The Map Factor app is great because I can have maps of all the states I visit already in my phone's memory. The turn by turn directions are very accurate.

I did try the Here app @jonsie but I didn't get on with it. I think maybe because I was using a very early beta of the app. I'm pleased to hear it works well for you. It's always good to have alternatives.

You can download your Google maps when connected to WiFi and then just use the GPS connection when navigating without using any data at all.
If you do decide to have data on for traffic updates it will only use very small amounts this way.

I may be wrong about this, so please correct me if I am, but I had always understood that you could download a map from Google for a specific area over WiFi, but you cannot get turn by turn directions unless you're connected to data.

@BambinoThis thread has really sparked my interest so I have had a look for an answer to that question...This is what I found...(Not sure if it answers what you have asked)
