Sonys official statement:
“The Xperia Z line has reached its culmination – Xperia X series represents a new chapter and evolution of our product strategy. Whilst the Xperia Z series was all about bringing the best of Sony’s advanced technologies to smartphones, Xperia X series is based on bringing smart, adaptive Sony user experiences across camera, battery performance and hardware / software design.”

mnnn....X comes before Z in my alphabet. ...Surely a name would have been better? Sony Solar or Sony Andromeda or anything other than a letter?

I feel the need for a copyright registration. ...

The problem with names is that they can mean different things in different markets and language isn't universal in all cases.
Using letters as branding is a safe option.

For instance, in Japan (sonys home BTW) the letter X means BAD

Same with numbers.  In Thailand,  0 and 7 both mean death so the S7 will sell well...you trying to tell me that manufacturers look at names or letters before releasing a product?

The direct translation of the word "x" in Japanese to English is "healthy"

Instead of ticks and crosses they use O= maru and X= batsu
Maru is good
Batsu is bad.
There was a big thing a few years back because the Xbox meant bad box to Japanese.
