Will 2015 be known as the Virtual year?

One of the bigger things to come out of MWC thus far is that virtual reality continues to try to make a splash.

We’ve already seen the amazingly innovative Oculus in action, and others have tried to follow suit – the Samsung Gear VR being a notable competitor, as well as other attempts and forays such as Sony’s ‘Morpheus’ headset for immersive virtual reality gaming or even Microsofts recently touted ‘Holo Lens’ project. Could 2015 be the year that virtual reality takes off?

Yesterday HTC announced their new HTC One M9 – you can see more about that here – but one of the side-announcements of it was the new HTC Vive headset. This is a collaborative effort between HTC and Valve, one of the biggest names today in gaming. Surely any virtual reality headset that’s backed by such a huge gaming company will be the spark for the Virtual Revolution? Just imagine yourself fully immersed in a digital but life-like world where everything you look at seems so real that your senses become blurred… You know it’s not real, but your senses say different.

Picture these scenarios:

  • Long day at work? Throw on your headset and load up a beautiful idyllic island, standing on the beach watching the birds fly overhead as the sun sets
  • Didn’t have the money to go to the Formula 1 this year? Put that headset on and you’re there, watching the action right from the pit-wall
  • Researching for a history project and wish you could have been there when mount Vesuvius erupted? Done, you’re there in the coliseum
  • Looking at holiday destinations and wish you could take a virtual tour of your hotel before making a decision?

What do you think? Should virtual reality still be confined to science fiction or is 2015 the year that it becomes a… reality?

It definitely looks like competition will be rife - could be good for the consumer. Think Googles little Cardboard project could take them on? 😉
