That could potentially make fibre redundant or at least get high speeds to the rural dead zones.

It would be fantastic if that happened, but there's one sentence in the article that brings out the sceptic in me:
"It remains to be seen whether it will be possible to replicate the speeds in real-world conditions."
Like many new things touted, the theory far surpasses the reality.
Having said that, in limited areas there is 1GB download broadband speed out there now.
