4g news

There are 4 main networks in the UK; EE (T-Mobile/Orange), O2, Vodafone and Three. To date, only one of those networks has 4G coverage in Bristol.

That network is EE. Created by the merger of Orange UK and T-Mobile UK, EE (also known as ‘everything everywhere’), launched 4G in various UK cities on 30th December 2012. One of those first launch cities was Bristol. But since then, EE have remained to be the only network with 4G coverage in the city.

So what’s happening with the 4G coverage from O2, Vodafone and Three? We went to find out more.

O2 – After contacting O2, they told us that O2 4G would be launching in Bristol “very very soon”. They later said that it would be in a “few months time”. Last Thursday (9th January 2014), O2′s service status website showed that coverage in Bristol may be patchy on that date because works were going on at all of O2′s Bristol masts. We asked about this and O2 said that “all cells in the Bristol area are being updated in preparation for 4G”. So it appears that O2 have got their 4G network ready for their Bristol launch. Unfortunately out past news post suggesting that O2 4G would launch before the end of 2013 appeared as just a rumour.

I'm in the same boat. I live just 10 miles from Manchester yet no sign of 4G arriving here. Available mow on EE so trying to decide whether to change or not to EE although keeping my legacy tariff for my backup phone.

O2 announced on Friday that 4g has reached 33% of indoor population / 40% of outdoor population.

O2 also announced plans for 25% of their masts will be upgraded to 4g before the end of 2014.

As always ultimately the OP has a choice of supplier but if the 3g signal is ok and delivers a reasonable service then personally I wouldn't waste money paying off a contract.

P.S. o2 also announced 200 areas that have never experienced 3g will also be upgraded by the end of this year.

If people have lost faith and have started looking at other Networks then I fear no amount of 'what will happen in the future' with O2 will sway them. 😞

All that's needed is more transparency.....
I don't understand the "big secret" mentality tbh...... ??
I have no affiliation whatsoever with O2 or any subsidiary companies. Comments posted are entirely of my own opinion. This is not Customer Service so we are unable to help with account specific issues.

There is obviously a rollout plan so why can't they publish it so people can make up their mind whether to wait for their area to be upgraded?

this was the response I got on the news article

"Hey Adam, hope you're having a tip top weekend. We've committed an extra £16million to deliver data services to over 200 areas that have never had data services before so this does include rural areas. They'll be more information throughout 2014 on our network but keep your eyes on the O2 Community because they'll be some interesting stuff coming up very soon!"

Hi Jonsie

Absolutely agree with you here. Three have done so, they have put their 2014 plans on their website so come on o2 it is your turn.

My view is that by publishing an estimate, even if as simple as the one on Three's website (nothing more detailed than 2014, not by month or week etc) then my gut feeling is that the customer base would be much happier. 😀😊
