But you can't buy it sim free from AT&T - You have to buy it on a contract so it's not cheaper, they just divert some of the contract prices into the price they pay Apple for the handset.
You can make the numbers say what you want but the selling price is consistant (or higher, depending on demand) everywhere.....

Also consider there is may contract variations; my one is split into two direct debits which come off on the same day - a fee for the handset and another for my calls/text/data.
With the iPhone contract is designed with all that in mind and it doesn't really matter how you pay for it, you will always pay the same for the handset. Some of the overall cost may be subsidised by O2 when you take out a 24-month contract.
That's the news dan' in da hood anyway.
