Weird ... iPhone 6 suddenly can't send email over 4G/3G

Hi

Until today I had no problems at all with 4G/3G.

All of a sudden today, I can't send emails on either of my 2 virginmedia accounts.

I can still receive emails no problem.

I can still send texts, make calls, browse the net ... no issues whatsoever

I just can't send emails! Crazy

It seems that it can't authenticate the SMTP server.

However, when I got home, switched wireless on and connected to my home network ...  no problems whatsoever.

Turn off wireless and I I can't send again.

O2 stated initiallly that since it worked on my wifi it clearly showed the network was ok.

Huh? Utter rubbish since we are talking two different networks ... it actually suggests the Virgin one is fine and the O2 network is not fine.

They suggested deleting my email accounts and re-enterring them.

Huh again?  clearly they are ok since they still work on wifi.

Just to please them so they could put a tick on their piece of A4 paper, I did it to one account anyhow and sure enough it didn't do anything.

(basically the equivalent of your ISP who suggests that switching everything off and on again will cure all known faults :smileytongue:)

Then of course I get the "Well it's email and we don't support email problems" and I should get in touch with my ISP.

Thanks O2, I'll remember that when renewal time comes round.

Naturally my ISP, though much more helpful than O2, could only suggest it was a problem with the O2 network.

O2 are adamant that it isn't. Smiley Frustrated

Anybody else experienced anything similar or know if there's a fix please?

Cheers

Mark

So how was it resolved?
Just asking because for me I used MI5's settings and it worked (I've not used vm mail on phone before)
So what your end resolved the issue?

Basically, O2 tech support are as useless as Virgin media tech support usually are.

You ring up with an connectivity issue and all they do is deny anything is wrong and try and persuade you that your equipment is the problem.

It almost ALWAYS transpires that it is in fact their problem.

I told you how it was resolved.

The problem just disappeared.

It was an O2 network issue.

My settings are the same as they have always been.

MI5's suggested settings will not work for everybody btw, it depends on what your domain name is.

There are 3 (i think) flavours.

Best bet is to check on the virgin web site for you're specific case.

Mine is blueyonder.co.uk and ssl is not the way to go (certainly not for download anyhow).

But smtp.blueyonder.co.uk needs to use port 465 correct?
Imap.blueyonder.Co.UK used port 25.
Or am I wrong?

465 for ssl, 25 for non ssl as far as I recall.

Best bet is to check on virgin site for various configs

I did, the advised configuration is to use ssl and port 465
Surprised they still allow 25 to work tbh, not many now do or allow non ssl connection to mailservers.

Well, try it and let me know what download speed you get.
I found mine had a 500KB/s cap on it courtesy of googlemail.
The 2nd line tech support guy said it was crap and should be avoided too for blue yonder.co.uk customers when I spoke to them meatier today.
All I know is i tried it a year ago and preferred getting my email downloaded at 100Mb instead of 500Kb slight_smile

Tbh I doubt very much you'd get 100mb on 3/4g
Or would ever need it for mail.

Obviously that's on a wired connection.
And when you're downloading large files, I think you'll find 500Kbs (ie what my original telewest download speed was 12 years ago) is unbelievably slow!
