Try backing up your data to I cloud them factory resetting your phone if you're still short on space. I did that recently on my 5s and recovered 3-4Gb of space.

Delete any apps you don't use anymore, then copy all your photos and video's to your PC and delete them off the phone.

I'd suggest also removing any music you don't listen to - I had about 4GB of music on my phone at one point.

I'm sure there are some apps that can tell you how much space you have used and where.
Windows 10|SurfaceBook2-512|Lego|Wheelchair Reviews
Sony Xperia ZX Premium (because I loved the Try The Tech phone so much)

The good news is when iOS 9 lands in a few weeks time the OS itself is a smaller footprint in size so should give you some space back
