3g is turned on in settings? settings> general> network > enable 3g ?
are you on an iphone data tariff?
what apn's are you using do you get any error messages?

try turning 3g on & off & see if that does the trick. if not try a restore via itunes, if that doesnt work book a genius appointment at your nearest apple store. they will look at your phone, if it is in warranty they will swap it there & then. if out of warranty they will charge you £119 for a replacement phone

Do you never see E or the 3g symbol? only the gprs o ?

Have you tried a new sim?
If yes then it could be hardware fault. Try a new sim to see if that helps.
If not book a genius appointment and they can advise if it is definatly a hardware issue and then you can chose what to do.

But apple will do out of warranty replacement for £119 as stated and if you did that you can sell it on at your renewal time and make some of that cost back and have a working phone with 3 months warranty.
Just a suggestion.
Even hiding sware words may attract mods intervention I would edit the sware word out before you get modded.
