SMTP outgoing server verification timing out

Hi,

 

For some unknown reason (I had made no changes to any settings) my email servers have completely stopped working since Friday last.

After much kerfuffle, I've now got the incoming server working and mail coming through, but the outgoing server willnot respond. I've tried re-entering the primary server details but to no avail.

When verifying details it times out with "The SMTP server is not responding. Check your network connection and that you entered the correct information at "outgoing mail server" field".

 

Yes, I am connected to my network.

 

I have set the fields up as follows

 

SERVER - switched to 'ON'

Host name: smtp.o2.co.uk

user name: myemailid@virgin.net

password: as set up

use ssl: OFF

authentication: password

server port: 25

 

when I click 'done' it starts "verifying" but then times out and responds with above message.

 

what am I doing wrong, can someone help me with this issue?

You can't use the O2 SMTP server with a Virgin account. Either use your O2 username and password or your Virgin SMTP server with authorisation (if it is allowed)

To contact O2 click "Contact us" at the bottom of any O2 page, and click the service you need, or wait for "Live Chat" to appear.

Apologies, if I've got this wrong, but it has been working fine for around 18months, until last Friday.

 

I changed my o2 user name today (when trying to resolve the id problem as I was prompted when signing in to O2 to change it) to reflect my virgin email id - so I am using my o2 id and password when entering the details

 

Has something just changed with O2 and virgin to affect this?

http://www.o2.co.uk/ispsettings select the drop down for virgin try the steeings using your virgin details

 

Also check itunes settings for email sync is unchecked

It should not have worked with @Virgin.net it should be an @o2.co.uk address.

 

The log in to O2 Website has changed recently but this has not changed anything to do with the mail servers

Thanks, but that isn't working either.

 

(I'm not particularly tech savvy, but I think I got he fields right)

 

Any other ideas?

Have you got wifi disabled when setting this up?

 

Also have you tried deleting the account fully and setting up again from scratch?

I'm not sure what the solution is now, as I said it has been working just fine. Do I have to abandon using the virgin account on my IP4 to reply to mail or is there a work around?

Wifi is enabled and connected fine.

 

I'll try the full delete and re-instate details
