Hi @Anonymous Welcome to the forum...

It is stopped automatically after O2 take the final payment. You can cancel your DD but ONLY if you leave it 4-6 weeks after contract end

You can check this via My O2 http://www.o2.co.uk/myo2

O2 should stop requesting the phone payment but it's best you check your bank account.
Remember that your airtime payment will still continue unless you cancel that separately.

All depends on what your mate actually did or didn't cancel I guess?

This is dependent on which type of contract your pal has, if it's O2 Refresh then paying off the phone allows him to cancel the airtime part of the contract, but they need to be told what you want to do.

For older contracts he would need to give 30 days notice at the end of the minimum period.
