I have an old Freeserve POP3 account firstname.lastname@example.org which I cannot get working on my iPhone. I have entered all of the correct settings as from my Outlook express account details and it will not work at all!
All I get is unable to connect to pop.freeserve.co.uk I have tried most of the freeserve incoming addresses and non of them work! I have even tried 2 other iPhones and non of them work either! But if I put the same account details in on a PC or Mac it all works fine!!!
My settings on the iPhone are:-
Incoming Server: pop.freeserve.co.uk
Outgoing Server: smtp.o2.co.uk
Please help, as this is driving me mad!

On your iPhone go to Settings > General > Network > Cellular Data Network.
Delete the 'vertigo' username and replace it with o2web
Switch the phone off and back on (this is important).
Now try your freeserve email again and you should now find it works on the iPhone using a cellular connection.

You're not alone with this, I had nothing but problems with my freeserve account, sometimes it would not download mail for 2 days. After 6 months I got so fed up of trying alernative ways and it still not working that I created a new e-mail address with another provider.
