Taking HTC Desire Abroad - how can i avoid roaming charges ?

I’m Off to France Tomorrow and had already decided to simply keep my htc desire switched off so I don’t get any data roaming charges on my bill, but today I'm thinking why should I keep my phone off, I want to use it for mp3's and taking pictures, and if possible use Wi-Fi when I can
Does anyone have some advice on how I can completely avoid charges on my desire when going abroad?
I know I can switch off mobile network and switch off roaming but I'm paranoid this wont completely stop me from being charged
So any tips ?

Get an inexpensive PAYG SIM from a French phone provider and pop that in instead of your O2 SIM.

Yes that's correct, but when you return to the UK and put your O2 SIM back in it will automatically revert to the UK settings. I have a Desire and I use a US T-Mobile SIM when travelling there. When I get back here and put the O2 SIM back in my settings are fine.

yes i can put my o2 sim back in but it doesn't put in the correct settings by default, i have to manually put them in all over again, i know this because i have been through the whole settings thing all before

I can only go by my own experience, and that has been that the settings were fine once the O2 SIM was back in the phone. I didn't have to enter anything manually. Apart from that, even if you do have to enter them manually it only takes a minute or two to do it and it's certainly not difficult.
