Does anyone have some advice on how I can completely avoid charges on my desire when going abroad?
I know I can switch off mobile network and switch off roaming but I'm paranoid this wont completely stop me from being charged
So any tips ?

i could do that but then my phone will pick up on the fact that its a new sim card and all my o2 uk data/mms settings will change
Yes that's correct, but when you return to the UK and put your O2 SIM back in it will automatically revert to the UK settings. I have a Desire and I use a US T-Mobile SIM when travelling there. When I get back here and put the O2 SIM back in my settings are fine.
