Samsung galaxy note 1 saying not connected to network

I've just purchased a galaxy note 1, when I put my sim card in I can't make a call as it says not connected to network, anybody any ideas how to sort this out please?

Where did the phone come from?
Have you seen it working?
Is it unlocked or on O2 network?
Does data work?
If any doubts as to the phone been straight, call O2 and ask them to check the IMEI isn't blocked http://www.o2.co.uk/contactus

Its off a mate n I've loaned it before and it was fine, sim card in and worked straight away

Advise your friend your having an issue with the phone ,and or also try another SIM card as a process of elimination.
