O2 are refusing to unlock my Sony Z1 bought from Carphone Warehouse

I am now out of contract with my Sony Z1 Compact. I want to give it to my son with a BT sim.

O2 are saying that they do not unlock phones purchased from Carphone Warehouse.

I have tried 4 times via the O2 website login, each time I get an email a few hours later stating:

"I'm sorry, we have not been able to unlatch your device at this time.
The reason given is:
This is not an O2 device, it will not be possible for us to provide an
unlatching code."

I have phoned O2 and spoken to them over Live Chat. Each time they state that they cannot unlock Carphone Warehouse purchased phones and that I need to contact Carphone Warehouse.
Carphone Warehouse state that I need to speak to O2. Their website states:

"To get your device unlocked, get in touch with the network your device is locked to. They'll be able to unlock your device for you, though they may ask you to pay a fee before they do so.

We don't unlock devices or recommend getting your device unlocked in any other way because this can invalidate your device's warranty."

Any ideas?

CPW phones are not locked - just put the BT sim in and use it.
I have no affiliation whatsoever with O2 or any subsidiary companies. Comments posted are entirely of my own opinion. This is not Customer Service so we are unable to help with account specific issues.
