Does anyone know if whilst travelling in europe I can disable texts and phone calls on my nexus 5 and only send and receive E mails? I was able to do this with my old Blackberry and this kept the costs at a minimum.

You can put the phone into Airplane mode and just keep WiFi on to connect to data services when in a WiFi hotspot range.
That will all be free.

Another avenue.

Ensure your phone is unlocked to all networks and use a local SIM card.

Then if wifi fails are is not available you have a choice and no roaming charges.
