Go into messages and then select the settings menu. Check the message centre number is correct :

Message service centre settings

  • +447802000332 for Pay Monthly, or

Does this service code work?

*#*#4636#*#*

If so select Phone Information then SMSC

I've tried this on the Sony Xperia j and it says there's an update error, when I go via phone information and smsc.. It used to be a contract phone, now a pay & go.

Should be exactly as written here but if it's wrong on your phone it means you have the wrong sim as the message centre number is read off the sim card.

+447802000332 for Pay Monthly
or
+447802092035 for Pay & Go
